PSHE

We currently use the curriculum framework from Coram life, called SCARF, this is supported by a yearly visit from the Life Bus.  SCARF provides the framework for a whole-school approach to improving children’s wellbeing and progress, based on five values:

Safety
Caring
Achievement
Resilience
Friendship

SCARF provides a whole-school teaching framework centred on the ‘Growth Mindset’ approach – promoting positive behaviour, mental health, wellbeing, resilience and achievement.  The SCARF values are brought to life through stories of Harold the giraffe and his friends, songs, films, and thought-provoking and fun activities.  As children get older, while they still cherish Harold, themes about wellbeing and relationships are explored in greater depth and resources are tailored to their age group.

SCARF provides a strong foundation for children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural education (SMSC) and development; it is at the heart of the SCARF curriculum.  SCARF provides a robust framework for promoting a positive ethos and values cross the school community, contributing significantly to British Values education, both explicitly and implicitly.

The focus across the three themes of:

* Health and Wellbeing
* Relationships
* Living in the Wider World

These themes help foster and develop children’s responsibility for their own actions; respect for the actions and beliefs of others; an understanding of how each individual is protected by the rule of law; and how everyone can make a positive contribution to society through the democratic process.

Throughout the course of the year the PHSE curriculum is enhanced through participation in:

* Road Safety Training
* Bikability
* Tots on Tyres
* Scooter Safety

Alongside the SCARF scheme of work we also follow the myHappyMind programme.

myHappymind is delivered by class teachers in school.  It is taught once a week at the beginning of the week and then the concepts are reiterated throughout the week through regular teaching and learning.

myHappymind is taught across five modules and each introduces a new set of content and habits to help children build resilience, self-esteem and confidence:

Meet Your Brain

Supports children to understand how the brain works and how to ensure we look after it so that we can manage our emotions and be at our best. Growth mindset is a key part of this too.

Celebrate

Supports children to understand their unique character strengths and learn to celebrate them. This is a fantastic module for building self esteem.

Appreciate

Supports children to understand how why gratitude matters and how they can develop gratitude as a habit. Gratitude is key to wellbeing and resilience and we’re all about making it a habit!

Relate

Supports children to understand why positive relationships matter and how to build them. We’re focussed on the building blocks of good relationships and friendships.

Engage

Supports children to understand how to set meaningful goals that matter and how to keep resilient in times of challenge. This module is all about building self esteem and resilience too.
